What happens when a woman sings her truth? When her desires, doubts, wit, and wounds are all laid bare through music? In “I’m a Stranger Here Myself”, we invite you into a world of richly drawn female characters—complex, courageous, and utterly human.
This voice and piano recital is a journey through some of the most evocative and emotionally charged repertoire in 20th-century musical theatre. Each song is a dramatic soliloquy: at times disarmingly humorous, at others heartbreakingly raw. Together, they paint a vivid tapestry of what it means to live, to long, and to belong.
The program crosses both time and place—from the urbane, jazz-tinged world of George Gershwin and Kurt Weill to the darker, dramatic landscapes of Man of La Mancha and The Scarlet Pimpernel. Along the way, we meet women navigating love, loss, identity, and desire—sometimes with a wink, sometimes with a tear, always with music that resonates.
Program includes:
-
One Life to Live (from Lady in the Dark) – a stylish ode to the urgency of existence
-
I’m a Stranger Here Myself – a wry and sensual reflection on being an outsider
-
By Strauss (Gershwin) – a playful jab at musical snobbery and romantic entanglements
-
Aldonza (from Man of La Mancha) – the shattering cry of a woman who refuses to be idealized
-
I’ll Forget You – a tender farewell wrapped in lyrical melancholy
-
Your Daddy’s Son (from Ragtime) – a devastating confession from a mother in mourning
-
Man Wanted – a sharp, cabaret-style anthem of romantic practicality
Whether defiant, grieving, seductive, or searching, the women at the heart of these songs are anything but one-dimensional. They remind us that every story, every voice, deserves to be heard in its full complexity.
Join us for an evening of musical storytelling—intimate, theatrical, and unforgettable!
